ABHA ID at the Registration Counter: How It Actually Works

28 August 2026 7 min read

How does ABHA ID work at a hospital registration counter?

If the patient already has an ABHA number or ABHA address, reception enters it and the patient’s identity is confirmed against the national registry, so name, age and gender do not need typing. If they do not have one, reception can create it at the counter from an Aadhaar number or a mobile number, with an OTP the patient approves. Linking their records to that ABHA then requires a second consent from the patient.

The patient already has an ABHA

Reception types the 14-digit ABHA number or the ABHA address, which looks like an email. The national registry returns the patient’s verified details, so demographics are not re-typed and not mis-typed.

This is the point of the whole system. A name spelled three different ways across three hospitals is three patients; an ABHA number is one person.

The patient does not have one

It can be created at the counter. Aadhaar-based creation is fastest: the patient gives their Aadhaar number, receives an OTP on the mobile linked to it, and reads it out. The ABHA is created in under a minute.

Where a patient is uncomfortable sharing an Aadhaar number, or the linked mobile is not with them, creation by mobile number is the alternative.

Why the OTP is not a formality

The OTP is the patient saying yes. It is the check that the person whose records are being linked actually agreed to it — and those records may include treatment at other hospitals.

Any hospital system that skips that step, or uses a fixed code, has removed the patient’s say from the process. It is worth asking your vendor how the OTP is delivered.

What reception should know

Creating an ABHA is not mandatory for treatment. A patient who refuses is registered normally, and the hospital works exactly as it did before. Pressuring patients is both wrong and counterproductive.

The counter benefit is real though: the second visit is faster, referrals arrive with history attached, and PM-JAY beneficiaries are identified without a separate process.
